Closed Captioning Corrections with Office of Students with Disabilities

The Office for Students with Disabilities invites you to collaborate on a pilot project to assist us in correcting auto generated captioning for course lectures, staff training, and other campus events. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing rely on captioning to learn and understand information that is presented verbally. Learners for whom English may not be their primary language or who are primarily visual learners will benefit from access to captioning as well.

The University currently has ways of providing virtual learning and training, including Canvas, Zoom, and Teams. Captioning can be turned on and provided by a machine that uses algorithms to determine and post what is said. However, auto or machine captioning is only 70-80% accurate and may be even less accurate when the subject matter is highly technical, the speaker has an accent or speaks softly, or there are network issues including slow internet speeds.

Providing accurate captioning for videos is crucial to providing equitable access to all learners. During this pilot program, you will be given access to a video that has been auto captioned and provided with instructions on how to correct the captioning. We hope that this activity will make you more aware of the importance of accurate captioning.
