Beach Cleanup

Trash is one of the most widespread pollution problems threatening our oceans and waterways worldwide – yet it is entirely preventable. Trash is more than just an eyesore. It is a threat to wildlife and ecosystems, while potentially threatening our food supply and human health. When we trash our oceans, we trash our life support system. YOU can help by participating in the UC San Diego Spring Break Beach Cleanup!

Additionally, you have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing education and policy efforts (targeting the sources of the trash) by Surfrider Foundation by logging your findings. By completing data sheets, you contribute to Surfrider’s local, state, and nationwide databases which highlight the main sources of pollution on our shores.

It is more important to help clean up now than ever before because the amount of trash is increasing with all of people’s take-out containers and the types of trash are also changing with PPE. Every resident in San Diego is impacted by the 11 watersheds within our region and there are projections that there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans by 2030. The impact of trash in our oceans can only be impacted by accurate data regarding the type of trash currently polluting our oceans and with the removal of current trash.

Due to to the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve adapted to safe, physically distant “Solo” Asynchronous Beach Cleanups. Pick up a beach clean up packet which will include a picker upper, trash bag, gloves, and a data sheet, and instructions. The instructions will include transportation options (including route suggestions), instructions on where to dispose of the trash, and more.
