Volunteering In-Person


If you're comfortable, healthy, and not in an at-risk group, there are local organizations with urgent volunteer needs that could use your help. Please review our safety guidelines before attending projects in-person. Here are the projects you can sign up with through HandsOn San Diego:

These organizations are providing essential services and could use your support. You will need to sign up with them directly:

Food Distribution/Delivery

  • ElderHelp of San Diego

    • Get started by attending an online orientation so you can support seniors with deliveries of groceries and other essential items, and/or providing medically necessary transportation.

  • Father Joe's Villages

    • Volunteers are needed weekdays, 7:30am - 3:30pm to help put together food packages to-go (drive-thru style). Create an account and sign up for a shift here

  • Interfaith Community Services

    • Volunteers are needed to assemble sack lunches, help at their drive-up food distribution, repackage bulk items, deliver meals, and more.   

  • It's All About the Kids Foundation

    • IAATK relies on individuals and volunteer groups to help us distribute food to hundreds of families each Thursday. Anyone who is 11 years of age and older is welcome to volunteer.

  • Mama's Kitchen

    • Fill out an application and attend an orientation to stage and/or deliver meals to our neighbors struggling with AIDS or cancer who are too sick to shop and cook for themselves.

  • Salvation Army San Diego

    • The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers to assist with the urgent need to sort food and distribute to people in our community who are in crisis. They have locations in El Cajon, Downtown San Diego, Clairemont, and Chula Vista.

  • Serving Seniors

    • Help with delivering meals to seniors or preparing/distributing meals for pick-up to homeless seniors. 

  • Wesley Community Services Center

    • Wesley Community Services Center is hosting food distributions Monday - Friday, 11:00am - 3:00pm. They use masks, gloves, and practice social distancing, and only a few volunteers interact with the public. If you can volunteer call Cheryl at (619) 972-8267.

Serving/Cooking Meals

  • Father Joe's Villages

    • Father Joe's Villages serves three meals daily out of two kitchens on-site to individuals and families who are homeless. Shifts take place daily: breakfast 5:50am - 8:00am, lunch 10:30am - 12:30pm, and dinner 4:30pm - 6:30pm. Create an account and sign up for a shift here

  • Jewish Family Service of San Diego

    • Volunteers are needed to prepare home-delivered meals for older adults in the JFS Loonin Family Kitchen. As community need grows, they have increased their production of nutritious, home-delivered meals from 400 to 1,600 a day. Commercial Kitchen experience is a plus but not mandatory to volunteer.
