FOOD: Pantry Prep

Every Thursday and Sunday, Porchlight Community Services processes over 3,000 pounds of rescued food that will be going to our community's families.  Porchlight is volunteer led, which means no one on their team gets paid, so they rely on their great community of folks that want to give back.

Porchlight provides a dignified experience for those seeking to change their circumstances and have access to nutritious food. As a "Choice pantry", their distribution events are set up like a grocery store. Clients come in and choose their food products while accompanied by a volunteer.

Volunteers help with unloading, sorting, organizing food items on tables, shelves, and refrigerators and freezers, cleaning, sanitizing and making it comforting and appealing for those that will be coming to “select” their items later in the day.

Sign up to see how you can play a critical role in helping families have access to food while working toward achieving long term financial stability.

Project Requirements & Important Notes

  • Attire: Closed-toe shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

  • Safety: Wearing a face mask is required to attend this project. Please do not attend this project if you have been in contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 within the last 2 weeks. Porchlight's clients are immunocompromised and they're doing everything they can to keep them safe.

  • Physical Requirements: Bending, lifting, carry up to 20lbs. Restroom access is only available via stairs.

  • Note: Signing up as a team has been disabled for this project. Last minute team cancellations for a shift this small can be extremely detrimental to Porchlight being able to distribute food to families in need. Please sign up individually or email info@handsonsandiego.org to sign up with your child.
