ECO: Compost Pile Build
Come build a compost pile with BCDI! There is a giant pile of materials that need sorted, chipped and chopped so that they are ready to be transformed into compost.
You will learn the proper ratios of Carbon, Nitrogen, and High Nitrogen materials to use to reach and maintain temperatures needed to kill weed seeds and pathogens. You will also learn when to turn a pile, the dangers of an anerobic pile and indicators of a pile that is anaerobic.
The microbiology of compost is vital to proper nutrient cycling. If you would like to come back, we will look at the finished compost under a micoscope to determine if the soil food web is alive and well, or if we need to work to imporove the balance of Fungi:Bacteria, or to increase protozoa and nematode populations.
