SORT: A Fresh Start for the New Year - Clothing Donation Sorting

As we welcome 2023, Sharia’s Closet needs a fresh start! They received an overwhelming amount of end-of-the-year clothing donations and their storage/sorting area is bursting at the seams. Sharia's Closet needs your help to sort, fold, and organize the clothing as well as organize their storage area.

Volunteers will sort clothing, organize clothing by gender/size, and put clothing back into the storage area in an organized fashion. The sorting will take place mostly outside under canopies.

Sharia's Closet depends on donations of clothing and volunteers to help fulfill their mission of providing emergency clothing to people in crisis in the San Diego community through their Bag of Hope program. By helping to organize their donated items and sorting/storage area, you will make it much easier to fulfill the Bag of Hope orders for their clients, allowing them to provide items in need more quickly.

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

  • Attire: Closed-toe shoes are required. Wear comfortable clothing and dress in layers/bring something warm. This opportunity takes place outdoors with little or no shade.

  • Bring: A water bottle and snacks. Sharia's Closet is asking for donations of plastic storage bins to help with organization of the storage space. If you have any you’d like to donate, please drop them off at the closet or simply bring them with you to the event. If you would like to purchase bins to support their organizational efforts, they are requesting the Sterilite 66qt ClearView Latch Box with Purple Latches from Target. Around 100-120 bins are needed to organize all of the clothing so any help with this effort would be greatly appreciated!

  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand/bend/stoop for periods of time and lift 20lbs. Unfortunately the project space is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Weather: If there is light rain, the event will still take place. If there is heavy rain, the event may need to be rescheduled. Volunteers will be alerted via email by 8:00am the day of the event if it is cancelled.

About Sharia's Closet

Founded in humble beginnings, the vision and intention of Sharia’s Closet have remained constant over the past 8 years to accommodate the growing need for emergency clothing in San Diego’s communities. All clothing and hygiene items that are graciously donated to Sharia’s Closet are then given to people in need, and there is never an exchange of money for the clothing and hygiene items that Sharia’s Closet provides. People of all ages, genders, identities, and cultural backgrounds are served with dignity and respect through Sharia’s Closet, one purple bag at a time.
