VIRTUAL: Volunteer Math Tutor
Make a difference in a student's life by joining EnCorps' Stemx Tutors Program! Tutors in this program will provide academic assistance to middle school students in low-income communities. These students are currently underperforming in math (Foundational Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I). In order to prepare them for the rigor of high school mathematics, STEMx Tutors will provide them access to quality education that will help them break the cycle of income barriers, pursue higher education, and secure jobs in the 21st century. EnCorps STEMx Tutors make a significant difference in a student’s relationship with math: 82% of students who take part in the program increased their math scores in the 2024-25 academic year.
STEMx Volunteer Expectations:
Frequency: 2 virtual tutoring sessions per week
Intensity: 1 hour per session
Duration: At least one semester (volunteers can continue further if they want to)
Professional Development & Support:
EnCorps provides their volunteer tutors with training and support. Your dedicated Program Manager will provide volunteers access to their Google Classroom filled with resources, invitations to online seminars, and the opportunity to join their annual Learning Summit where volunteers can network with other tutors as well as STEM professional who are exploring STEM teaching through the EnCorps STEM Teachers program.
In order to be considered for a STEMx tutor position, volunteers must meet one of the below eligibility scenarios:

Have a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher (does not have to be in a STEM field) and have at least 1 year of hands-on STEM industry work experience

Have an advanced degree in a STEM field

Junior or senior in a college-accredited STEM bachelor’s program with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

Hold a professional certificate in a STEM field and have at least 1 year of hands-on STEM work experience current or former credentialed math teacher
Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Time Commitment: 1-hour session twice a week for two consecutive semesters. Volunteers can optionally stay in the program for longer.

Onboarding Process: Application, screening, background check, and orientation. Average onboarding takes about 1 week.

Physical Requirements: This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations.
