SORT: Where the Wild Books Are - Book Prep & Organization

Books don’t shelve themselves—and Words Alive needs your help to get them into the hands of eager young readers. Their “Where the Wild Books Are” events are a fun and impactful way to support literacy in your community.

Volunteers gather at the Words Alive office and warehouse in East Village to sort, count, and prepare materials for literacy programs that serve over 5,000 children and teens each year. From packing book bags to organizing curriculum, every task helps make learning more accessible.

No two sessions are the same. Volunteers might be bundling books for a classroom, prepping craft kits for a family workshop, or helping track inventory. It’s hands-on, meaningful work that supports a mission you can be proud of.

This opportunity is especially great for people who enjoy organizing, connecting with other volunteers, logistics, or working with educational materials. It’s also a great introduction to the broader work Words Alive does, and a chance to explore other volunteer roles that might be a good fit for you.

Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or just getting started, this is a great way to make a difference.
