ECO: Waste Station Warriors at Kai Elua Outrigger Canoe Club Iron Championship

Kai Elua Outrigger Canoe Club is hosting their Iron Championship race and wants to incorporate sustainability into their event. As many of their members are ocean-loving and eco-friendly, Sustainability is Sexy is stoked to be partnering with them! Sustainability is Sexy will have Waste Station Warriors at the event to educate the community about proper waste sorting and diversion. It is a great opportunity to learn and share important environmental information.

Volunteers will assist with zero-waste event efforts including educating attendees and sorting and weighing waste to divert recycling and organics from our local landfills. Sustainability is Sexy will have an on-site coordinator training volunteers on how to go about sorting and facilitating the collection of full bags from the waste stations around the venue. The event is scheduled from 7:00am - 5:00pm. There are 3 shift options and Sustainability is Sexy is flexible to accommodate your availability!

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

• Attire: Comfortable, closed-toe shoes.Volunteers will be working on the sand to go around and collect bags from the waste stations so please choose comfortable shoes for working in the sand and near the dumpsters in the parking area. This opportunity takes place outdoors with little or no shade so volunteers should wear sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat. 

• Bring: Water, snacks, and reusable to-go containers/cutlery if you'd like to purchase food or beverages from the food trucks to help ensure a zero-waste event.

• Physical Requirements: There is a small amount of physicality required for a portion of the tasks at this event. This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations by providing seated positions for some volunteers. Unfortunately the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible because volunteers will be working in the sand.

• Waiver: Please fill out and send the Sustainability is Sexy waiver to liz@sustainabilityissexy.org in advance of the event.

• Photos: Volunteers may take photos during the event. Volunteers may also be in event photos.

• Note: Parking will be limited during the event as they are projected to have 1500 racers in attendance, so please try to carpool if possible with other volunteers. There will be some parking available along the access road, but Sustainability is Sexy does not have reserved volunteer parking.
