ANIMALS: Daily Feeding and Cleaning for Horses

Support Tecate Horse Rescue in caring for horses who have experienced poor treatment and/or were at-risk of euthanasia. Their large property in east county, about 50 minutes from downtown San Diego is a refuge for horses in need. Volunteers provide food and clean water to their rescued horses, mules, and ponies in addition to cleaning the space.


Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help with daily ranch chores and animal care

  • Cleaning/mucking (removing manure) corrals

  • Cleaning and refilling animals' waters

  • Feeding animals

  • Raking

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Comfortable working around large animals.

  • Able to follow detailed safety and sanitation instructions.

  • Physically capable of manual outdoor labor.

  • Positive attitude and respect for animal welfare.

Training Provided: 

  • On-site training provided at the beginning of the shift

  • Staff will provide safety instructions and demonstrate proper cleaning procedures.

Attire: Closed-toe shoes and layers of jackets, including windbreakers and clothing that can get dirty. 

Bring: It's recommended to bring a hat and gloves in addition to a water bottle that can be refilled at their tested and county-certified well.

Physical Requirements: Ability to rake and lift 5-8lbs, push a wheelbarrow, lean over and scrub a water trough, and move a 4-6lb water hose. This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations but volunteers must be able to stand. The space where this project takes place is wheelchair accessible but accommodations can only be made for vision or hearing. 

Waiver: All volunteers will be required to sign a Tecate Horse Rescue waiver when they arrive. 

Weather: Rain, snow, or extreme wind will cause this event to be canceled. Please check your email for a message from Tecate Horse Rescue for cancellations.

The mission of Tecate Horse Rescue is to rescue, rehabilitate, and find forever homes for at-risk equines while also involving them in Equine Assisted Education and Equine Assisted Therapy. They work with K-12 children, first responders, veterans, people with disabilities, and others who benefit from these programs.
