ECO: Creek Day

Paradise Creek is a salt marsh creek that flows into the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It was once an eyesore in the community with collections of trash, but is now an educational destination with a community garden. 

Volunteers are needed to maintain restoration of the creek and prevent trash from flowing out to the ocean. 


Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Key Responsibilities:

  • Picking up trash

  • Outdoors cleaning

  • Weeding

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Interest in environmental conservation and community improvement

  • Comfortable working outdoors and doing light physical labor

  • Able to follow directions and safety procedures

  • Gardening or invasive plant ID skills are helpful, but not required

  • Must be respectful of the habitat and surrounding community

Training Provided: 

  • On-site training provided at the beginning of the shift

  • Staff or site leaders will provide safety instructions, cleanup protocols, and native/invasive plant guidance

Attire: Wearing outdoor work clothes that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes is recommended. This opportunity takes place outdoors with little or no shade. Volunteers should wear sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat

Bring: All tools and supplies will be provided. You may want to bring your own work gloves

Physical Requirements: Some gardening type skills may help. This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations. Unfortunately the space where this project takes place is only somewhat wheelchair accessible

Weather: Volunteers will be notified the morning of the event if it is being canceled due to inclement weather
