ECO: Garden Guardian Fridays

Solana Center's demonstration site gives the public an opportunity to see everyday climate change solutions in action, and to learn more about their free and low-cost education and resources. Their garden provides an example of how people can save water, build healthy soil that sequesters carbon, produce food and support pollinators using whatever outdoor space they may have. By helping to keep their garden healthy, volunteers help provide education and inspiration to visitors at every stage of their environmental journey.

Volunteers will help perform routine garden maintenance including watering, weeding, pruning and general cleanup. Other projects, such as planting or spreading mulch will take place intermittently. Basic gardening experience is appreciated but not required.

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

  • Attire: Dress comfortably for the weather in clothes that can get dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required. Be sure to include any sun protection needed (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses). This opportunity takes place outdoors with plenty of shade

  • Bring: A reusable water bottle is suggested. They will have gloves available, but feel free to bring your own.

  • Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be able to comfortably perform the garden tasks of weeding, watering, light pruning, and spreading mulch. The ability to lift up to 30 pounds is helpful, but not required. There may be other more strenous tasks, but these will be optional. Volunteers are encouraged not to stress or strain themselves. Unfortunately this opportunity is not able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations and the space where this project takes place is not wheelchair accessible.

  • Weather: This event takes place outdoors, and will be canceled in the event of rain - unless only light rain is expected.

  • Photos: Official event registration, which will be emailed to volunteers, does include a waiver which grants the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation permission to use photographs of the individual or individual’s child/children in any and all of its publications, including website entries and social media venues. Volunteers who do not wish to be photographed may inform the volunteer coordinator, and will have the opportunity to step out of camera range if photos are being taken.

  • Note: Volunteers will receive a reminder email from the Solana Center 1 - 4 days prior to the event with directions and any other pertinent details. If volunteers are not able to make their shift, please inform the Solana Center as soon as possible.
