FOOD: Community Market Food Rescue Driver

Food Rescue Drivers are the backbone of the food supply at Porchlight Community Services and their FoodSHARE Pantry. These volunteers pick up donated food from local grocery stores, restaurants, and community partners. Then, deliver the donated food to Porchlight's pantry, keeping usable food out of landfills and nourishing families across San Diego. This is a hands-on, impactful role that combines driving, food safety, and community service.

Volunteers are asked to commit to this role at east twice a month for 3-6 months. Volunteers will share weekly coverage.


Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pick up donated food from local grocery stores, restaurants, and community food partners

  • Transport food safely and efficiently to Porchlight's pantry location

  • Record food weights at each pickup to track impact and meet food rescue reporting requirements

  • Monitor and document food temperatures to ensure food safety standards are maintained throughout transport

  • Inspect, clean, and perform a safety check of the pantry vehicle before and after each run

  • Communicate any issues (vehicle condition, food quality, donor notes) to pantry staff

  • Represent FoodSHARE professionally with all food donor partners

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record

  • Comfortable driving a van or cargo vehicle (training provided)

  • Comfortable driving Porchlight's cargo van or a personal truck/SUV for these pickups.

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and move food boxes and bins

  • Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious

  • Passion for food rescue, sustainability, or hunger relief

Training Provided: Full orientation and vehicle training provided

Attire: Closed-toe shoes and appropriate clothing for heavy lifting. 

Bring: Please bring a water bottle.
