Board Director of Marketing
Womanity Portrait Foundation is a young San Diego nonprofit that uses portrait photography, storytelling, retreats, exhibitions, and healing-centered arts programs to support women impacted by breast cancer. Strong marketing and communications will help more women learn about their programs, help community partners understand their work, and connect the organization with volunteers, donors, sponsors, and supporters.
The Board Director of Marketing & Communications will help shape how Womanity presents its mission, programs, and impact to the public. This person will play an important role in growing the organization while helping them share women’s stories with dignity, care, and respect.
Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes
Key Responsibilities:

Help develop and guide strategies that increase awareness of portrait photography programs, self-portrait workshops, wellness retreats, exhibitions, fundraising campaigns, and participant stories.

Work closely with the founder and other board members to strengthen Womanity’s public voice and create clear, consistent communications across its website, email campaigns, social media, media outreach, public relations, and community partnerships.

Set strategy while also supporting the practical development and review of communications.

The role may include leading volunteers or helping build a future marketing committee.

Participate in board meetings, planning, and organizational decision-making

Help establish marketing and communications priorities.

Advise the board on brand positioning, public messaging, and audience development.

Support the organization’s long-term growth and sustainability.

Help recruit and guide marketing or communications volunteers as the organization grows.

Develop communication calendars and campaign plans.

Review written and visual materials for clarity, accuracy, and consistency.

Help present program results, participant feedback, and organizational impact.

Create respectful guidelines for sharing participant stories and photographs Protect the dignity, privacy, and consent of women whose stories are shared.
Required Skills/Experience:

Professional experience in marketing, communications, branding, public relations, digital media, journalism, or storytelling.

Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.

Ability to think strategically and also help move projects forward.

Reliable, organized, and able to meet agreed deadlines.

Comfortable collaborating directly with the founder and board members.

Understanding of consent, privacy, and respectful storytelling.

Commitment to Womanity’s mission and the women the organization serves.
Desired Skills/Experience:

Experience with nonprofit marketing, healthcare communications, women-centered organizations, photography, visual arts, breast cancer support, fundraising communications, media relations, email marketing, social media strategy, WordPress, Canva, branding, or community outreach is helpful but not required.

Experience leading volunteers, contractors, committees, or small communications teams would also be valuable.
Time Commitment: Approximately 3 - 4 hours per week, including one board meeting per month, with a minimum commitment of one year. The schedule is flexible, and most responsibilities can be completed remotely. Some in-person participation in programs, exhibitions, or community events in San Diego County is encouraged.
Onboarding Process: Please follow the instructions outlined on this website. Selected applicants will participate in an introductory interview with the founder, followed by a conversation with members of the board. Final candidates may be asked to provide professional references and examples of relevant marketing, communications, branding, or campaign work. The selected candidate will review the organization’s bylaws, board expectations, conflict of interest requirements, confidentiality practices, current programs, and communication materials. The full application and onboarding process is expected to take approximately 2-4 weeks.
Physical Requirements: No specific physical abilities are required. Occasional in-person events may involve moving through an exhibition or event space, but accommodations can be discussed based on the individual’s needs.
Attire: There is no specific attire requirement for remote work or virtual board meetings. Business-casual attire is suggested for exhibitions, presentations, partnership meetings, and public events. Event-specific guidance will be provided when needed.
