FOOD: Equitable Community Meal Preparation and Service



Help prepare and serve fresh, nutritious community meals while learning about globally inspired cuisines. Volunteers help ensure that everyone can enjoy the same high-quality meals regardless of their ability to pay. Join SciCook in their mission to make healthy food accessible to all and to demonstrate how food can serve as preventive medicine for healthier, stronger communities.

This is a volunteer based program that allows more meals to be served when there are more volunteers present. Community members are not required to pay, but a donation is welcome for the next community meal.


Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Key Responsibilities:

  • Meal preparation - from prep to cooking, food packing and distribution, cleaning.

Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Basic kitchen skills will be helpful such as food prep, cooking, packing, cleaning, and distribution. 

  • Volunteers that commit to cooking regularly/long-term ​​will be required to take the food handler's certificate. Food hygiene is taken seriously.

Training Provided: No training is required unless volunteers decide to participate in long term cooking.

Attire: Closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes. Gloves and aprons will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to wear clothes that can get dirty. This opportunity takes place both indoors and outdoors, so volunteers should wear sun protection such as sunscreen and a hat.

Physical Requirements: Standing will be required for food prep, cooking, packing, and cleaning. This project is able to make accommodations for individuals with physical limitations as there are tasks that can be done seated at a chair and table such as food distribution and interacting with people. The space where this project takes place is wheelchair accessible.

Translation Services: A Spanish speaker is sometimes present at this project but it cannot be guaranteed. En ocasiones habrá un hablante de español presente en este proyecto, pero no se puede garantizar.

Photos: SciCook will be taking pics and posting. Volunteers are allowed to take pictures, but please ask permission when taking pictures of fellow volunteers.
